JOURNEY INTO THE DEEP

Before AI, Instagram filters, and way before silicone tails became a market, there was Hannah Mermaid — swimming in the deep end of myth, activism, and art.

Hannah Fraser created the vocation of ‘Freelance Mermaid’ in 2003 and has been featured worldwide for her ocean conservation and underwater performance art. Over the last two decades she has created spectacular mermaid tails, performed for film, music videos, photo campaigns, public speaking events & environmental actions. She is often referred to as the ‘Queen of the mermaids’.

At Permaculture Pinup, where our playful ethos is Bees, Trees, and Seas, Hannah embodies the "seas" in the most enchanting way possible. She reminds us that ocean stewardship is inseparable from the health of the whole living system and can be achieved through underwater art-form and on-land action.

This is our deep dive with Hannah to celebrate and showcase her career as the world's first professional freelance mermaid and our attempt at elucidating the potentail of today's Mer Movement.

Setting the stage before the bloom
As January continues to unfold and the landscape begins to subtly shift, I find myself returning to a familiar posture. Not one of arrival, but of preparation.
There is a moment before anything meaningful takes shape when attention matters most. Not because something is happening yet, but because something is being made ready. In nature, this moment might not be dramatic. It can be quiet and feel patient. This is where I am right now.
Across ancient cultures, people oriented themselves to the land and its cycles. They watched the sun, the water, the flowering of plants, and the timing of decay. Celebrations arose in response to what was actually happening in the environment, rather than being fixed abstractions.
In Egyptian cosmology, the setting sun marked a threshold rather than an ending. The sun did not vanish. It passed into another realm where renewal began. The western horizon was understood as a place of transition, sometimes symbolized by a feline guardian seated at the edge of the world, holding the space between what had been and what would come. It's twin (of sorts) sat seated on the opposite horizon in patient expectation of for the cycle to return, the sun to be rebirthed in the East.
That attentiveness to cycles continues inspires and informs my work.
Where I live, near the equator, seasons do not unfold in the way many people expect. We move primarily between two, with brief transitional periods that can easily be missed unless we are paying close attention. If we listened more carefully, we might notice many more micro-seasons shaping our lives than we were ever taught to name. Out of this awareness, Momento Oro emerged.

Call to Action: creating a day to remember the people of BIkini Atoll
Today, July 1st, marks the date in 1946 that the U.S. government and allies made an area on Earth multi-generationally unlivable. This place is the Bikini Atoll, and this event is the reason we have the name we do for the world-famous two-piece bathing suit.
Currently, July 5th celebrates the French designer who used the name of this atoll (so his new product might explode upon the fashion world). As part of the Rebrand Bikini campaign, Permaculture Pinup calls for a day when the U.S. and the world remember the Bikinian people for sacrificing their homeland with questionable consent.
To kick off this new July 1st Bikini Atoll Remembrance Day idea, Permaculture Pinup is pleased to receive awareness-support from Lightning Works, who will host a virtual Rebrand Bikini public event today at 12 pm CST. From their comic "Gunflowers", artist Pam Guitti will be drawing the character, Kaida, in a two-piece bathing suit (most people know to call a "bikini"). Permaculture Pinup has also submitted an application to National Day calendar.

All identities and body types are welcome to educate people about permaculture and create propaganda to heal Mother Earth.
What are we looking for?
We want cute pinup style or burlesque photos or videos to repost on social media or to be possibly highlighted in our official showcase, here on the website.
How do I submit?
The easiest way to submit is to hashtag #permaculturepinup. We will scan that hashtag weekly on both Facebook and Instagram. If we think the media is in line with our permaculture pinup and burlestyle-style aesthetic, we will, with much gratitude, repost your image.
ONLY AGES 18+
(we have the right to ask for I.D. verification for your participation in our project)
What's a special showcase model?
Anyone we repost is part of the permaculture pinup showcase. However, on occassion we will choose special showcase models we think have amazing media they submitted or a great message that deserves extra highlighting. Special showcase models are offered the opportunity to be part of our annual Advent Calendar for "Day out Time", a galactic permaculture initiative. We might also ask if we can make your submission officially "creative commons" so that we can flood the internet with permaculture propaganda. You may submit yourself to be one of these models although we will probably reach out to you if interested.
