Forging Futuro Nativo

Six years ago, I sat down with Philippa “Pippa” Attwood shortly after she began what would eventually become Futuro Nativo. At the time, she had recently transitioned from her work with Tree-Nation and was focused primarily on reforestation, inspired by her experiences in the Brazilian Amazon and a growing desire to support ecological restoration.

Since then, her journey has unfolded in beautiful. inspiring, surprising but not totally unexpected ways that have woven her several of her passions. What began with tree nurseries has expanded into long-term relationships with Indigenous communities across Costa Rica and Peru, supporting projects that range from cultural infrastructure and ecological restoration to artisan enterprises, music collaborations, education, and community-led initiatives.

What struck me most in catching up with Pippa wasn’t simply the growing list of completed projects, but how her understanding of conservation has evolved. Our conversation was less about delivering solutions and more about listening, reciprocity, and learning to support projects that emerge

from the communities themselves.

Activist Digital Etiquette: Stewarding the Spaces That Hold Us

Activists are often encouraged to be disruptive. Sometimes that’s exactly what’s needed. History is full of moments where breaking convention exposed injustice. But not every space benefits from disruption. Some spaces exist because someone carefully cultivated them around a particular purpose. An activist started the group. Members joined because they trusted that conversations would remain focused. That trust might be worth respecting.

Digital communities are systems that seem to function best when participants understands what the space was created to do.

Before posting, we can ask a few questions:

* Is this relevant to the group’s stated purpose?
* Would the administrator likely approve if I asked first?
* Am I contributing to the conversation already happening, or redirecting it?
* Is there another group that’s actually a better home for this post?
* Am I asking this community to spend attention that they intentionally gathered for something else?

None of these questions are meant to discourage participation.

Sometimes another organization has a fundraiser, a petition, or an emergency worth supporting. That doesn’t automatically mean every group should become another distribution channel. Communities aren’t simply collections of email addresses. They have identities, cultures, and purposes. When we regularly post outside those purposes, several things can happen.

* The boundaries of the group become unclear.

* Members begin wondering what “belongs” there.

Meet Miss Daisy Jai (AI)
Cultivating stories. Growing solutions. Hiding a few Easter eggs along the way. 🌼🐇
Every good garden deserves a few surprises.
Permaculture Pinup has always loved Easter eggs. Tiny details hidden in plain sight. A rabbit tucked into an illustration. A comic book reference hiding in a caption. A flower with an unexpected story. We believe learning doesn’t always have to arrive in a textbook. Sometimes it arrives with a cheeky smile.
So when it came time to introduce our "newest creative collaborator", we couldn’t resist making her one giant Easter egg. Meet Miss Daisy Jai (AI).
She isn’t a real person, and she isn’t pretending to be one. She’s our playful mascot for the growing collaboration between human creativity and artificial intelligence. As I, J. Jordan is often writing these pieces, I wanted a way to be playfully transparent if I am using AI assistance for any part of it. Is that ridiculous? We didn't do that with the switch from typewriters to computers or for word processing assistance that offered spell checks. But even if we speak to the AI for 10 minutes, it is doing a lot of editing work. There may be intensive collaboration and back and forth, but the AI seems to help so, it feels necessary to give it a co-writing credit. "J Jordan + ai" sounds lame and boring. Daisy Jai is super cute.

International Bikini Atoll Day

Reimagining the Origin story behind the Bikini
as a path "To Peace"
Three years ago, I learned why the bikini is called the bikini. Like many people, I had worn one countless times without ever asking where the name came from. When I discovered it had been named after Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, where an Indigenous community was displaced so the world’s newest and most powerful weapon could be tested, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
On July 1, 1946, the first nuclear test at Bikini Atoll forever changed the lives of the Bikinians. They had agreed to temporarily leave their ancestral home after being told their sacrifice would be “for the benefit of mankind.” Whatever they understood about nuclear technology at the time, few could have imagined the long shadow that radiation, displacement, and decades of uncertainty would cast over their community.
On July 5, 1946, French designer Louis Réard introduced a daring new swimsuit. Hoping its debut would be just as “explosive” as the headlines dominating the world’s newspapers, he named it the bikini.
The swimsuit became famous. In time, the people of Bikini Atoll largely faded from public awareness.
When I first learned this history, my instinct was simple: maybe we should rename the bikini. That idea became one of Permaculture Pinup’s earliest awareness campaigns: Rebrand Bikini.
We invited our community to imagine a name that could carry a different story into the future. One suggestion immediately stood out, the "To Peace" (offered by Terri Zacati).. We loved it.
We didn't expect the world to abandon the word bikini, but hoped it could redirect some of the conversation around it. From war toward peace. From destruction toward possibility. 🌿✨ Eco-Glamming an Old Favorite ✨🌿
One of the things our recent Permaculture Pinup mini retreat reminded us is that education isn’t something you create once and place on a shelf. In true permaculture fashion, we observe, interact, gather feedback, and continue refining.
The retreat wasn’t just teaching permaculture. It was permaculture in action.
The small group allowed us to see what sparked curiosity, what inspired conversation, and what people wanted to explore further. One thing that became clear is that many people are hungry for practical guidance about what can be grown locally for food, medicine, resilience, and abundance.
So rather than simply reposting an older Green Wave House resource as follow-up material, we decided to give it a little Permaculture Pinup eco-glam treatment. 💄🌺🌿
The result is a fresh new graphic highlighting some of our favorite regional staple plants and useful species for food forests, home medicine, and regenerative living.
Sometimes the information doesn’t need to change. Sometimes it just needs a new outfit.
We hope this updated piece inspires more people to look around their homes, neighborhoods, and communities and ask:
“What grows well here?”
“What nourishes people here?”
“What belongs in a resilient local landscape?”
The future is not miracle mono cropping but diverse systems that don't go out of style.

Our first mini-retreat

🌿✨ Permaculture Pinup Retreat Recap ✨🌿
Our first Permaculture Pinup Retreat was a mini success, made all the sweeter by the beautiful messages we received afterward. Rather than launching with a large audience, we intentionally chose a small, intimate gathering. We wanted to learn what the experience felt like, what flowed naturally, and how best to blend education, creativity, and community.

With a full group for our pilot, we discovered that three hours is enough to spark curiosity, but not enough to fully sink into the experience. Going forward, our retreats will likely evolve into a more immersive weekend format, with approximately six-hour days and the flexibility for participants to join one day, both days, or select individual activities.
During this first gathering, we introduced our community models to the foundations of permaculture, including its origin story, ethics, principles, and applications beyond gardening alone. We shared a bit of our own journey and even touched on the inspiration behind our Rebrand Bikini campaign, exploring how beauty and culture can be redirected toward regeneration and ecological stewardship.
From there, we wandered into the food forest for a blend of education and entertainment, learning through observation, conversation, and photography. Participants enjoyed food and beverages grown at Green Wave House while exploring the basics of home medicine making and the many ways plants can support both people and ecosystems.
Most importantly, we spent an afternoon cultivating connection: with the land, with each other, and with the idea that caring for the Earth can be joyful, creative, beautiful, and fun.
